I announced in my Christmas letter that I am running a marathon this year. It is something that I have wanted to do from about the age of 12. My best friend while growing up, Laura and I would run in the deserts by our homes and talk about how cool it would be to finish a marathon. I have decided that this is my year as I am not getting any younger and I figure that it is only going to get more difficult to complete this goal if I wait.
I went running this morning OUTSIDE! It felt so good to be out of the gym and breathing the fresh air. I came home and thought that I would check out when the marathon is going to be here in Bismarck. It is scheduled for mid Septmeber and I thought to myself that it is still pretty far away and that it shouldn't be time to really start the "training" for it. With that thought, I took a peek at when it was recommended to start the training and found that it is recommended to begin training thirty weeks before the race. I did the math and found that the marathon is thirty weeks away beginning this next Saturday! WHAT?! That took me by a complete surprise!!! To the programs credit, it looks pretty doable and I have set it up so that my long runs fall on Thursday's so that I can do them while my kids are in school. I may have to shift them once the summer arrives but for now I am excited that I can work on getting ready without being away from my family on the weekend.
Holy smokes, I can't believe that it is time for my journey to begin! I'm still open to anyone who wants to run this with me. I've heard the course is very flat and scenic. So....come on, you know you want to do it!
